Alpacas in a down Economy

The Alpaca industry, as with most, has seen a drop off in sales and sale prices for the past 18 months. If anyone tries to tell you differently they simply are not being truthful. Like any good investor, we try not to put all our eggs in one basket. I also try to encourage all our clients to diversify as much as possible as well. Heronwood raises alpacas, boards horses and has a few rental properties. That is a good balance and has worked well for us over the years. When one industry is down hopefully the other two are holding their own so we can ride out the storm. Alpacas are still a good investment for anyone that needs a tax write off. They still are the absolute lowest maintenace form of livestock on the planet. If you plan to build a barn, put up or repair existing fencing, buy a new or used tractor, buy a new or used truck, or do any type of updating on your property why not be able to write it ALL off. One can do that if they own Alpacas.
